Some cultures have a lot to share when it comes to storing food. The refrigerator has been our life-saver when we feel so full and want to eat our extra food for the next few days. Most of us follow a common belief that the colder the environment, the safer and best for storing food. Yet, some ingredients are not for colder temperatures, and others need to be put away from the freezer or basically in warmer places.

Cucumbers

People tend to call me “cucumber lover” since I can eat cucumber without rice in a day. I am shocked to know that it should not be stored for long. I used to keep it in the fridge and forget to eat it until I lose my appetite. Have you also done this? If yes, educate yourself that storing cucumbers in the refrigerator will make them watery and pitted.

It might disappoint people who love to eat cucumbers every other day. If you are fond of putting your excess directly in the fridge, be knowledgeable about what it might bring.

Potatoes

Keeping potatoes may vary if you will store it either in a cool or dry place. It’s a fact that potatoes should be stored in a cool place but not in the fridge. When you put potatoes in the refrigerator, the sugar that it contains will eventually increase. Interesting right? Studies also stated that potatoes need airflow to prevent the growth of their moisture that leads to spoilage. So the best way to store it is in a container that is NOT sealed, without being ventilated.

Peeled and Sliced Onions

Onions are spices that add up to the aroma and flavor to our food. If you are one of those people who peel or cut onions and allow leftovers to store in a cool and dry place, let me remind you that it’s not the right thing to do. Peeled onions can be stored in the fridge for 10-14 days, while sliced can only span into 7-10 days.

Broccoli

Broccoli is one of the healthiest foods in the world. However, are you aware that storing this a little bit longer will not give you good benefits? Are you one of those who love to store broccoli in a fridge to avoid excess efforts going to the market every other day? If yes, you will surely be disappointed with the thought that fresh broccoli will only last refrigerated for 7-10 days.

Studies explained that if you keep it for a couple of weeks, it will begin to smell and change its color. Also, the longer you store it, the higher number of nutrients is lost.

Hard-Boiled Eggs

Protein is an important aspect to make our body tone its muscles and make us healthier. Peeling hard-boiled eggs are safe one week after cooking by storing them in a refrigerator. However, if you leave hard-boiled eggs at room temperature for an extended period of time, it grants the bacteria’s desire to grow.

Seasoned or Cooked Vegetables

Either seasoned or cooked vegetables are stored only for three to seven days in a sealed container. Keeping it in for a couple more days is not good. Vegetables contain higher fluid that will lose their quality of being healthy. Also, the accumulation of moisture will increase rapidly.

Avocados

It is easy to differentiate avocado when it’s ripe or fresh. A ripe avocado is green on the inside, slightly firm when touched, and light green on the inside. A ripe avocado will still last 3 to 4 days in a warm place and span ten days in the refrigerator.

Fresh or Canned Mushrooms

It doesn’t matter whether you buy fresh or canned because mushrooms won’t last 10 days. The best way for you to maintain their freshness is to keep them in a cool and dry place, in a plastic bag because it prevents moisture that causes mushrooms to spoil.

In storing food, you must remember two different aspects. First, know its ingredients. Next, you must consider the environment. Some foods will only take 1-2 months when not stored properly. Keep in mind that if you are one of those people who always love to store food because you put too much on your plate, consider these helpful facts for you. If you can’t consume according to what you want, be disciplined enough to eat what you need. That will help save money too.
